About the Recipe

Scalloped potatoes are the perfect side dish recipe for the Holidays or any occasion. However, scalloped potatoes with ham take it over the top! Let me show you how to make scalloped potatoes with ham and your search for a side dish idea will be resolved. For a small or large gathering, this side dish is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp or 42g Butter

  • 1 cup or 100g Onion (diced)

  • 1 tsp Fresh Thyme Leaves

  • 3 tbsp or 24g Flour

  • 1/2 cup or 125ml Milk

  • 1 cup or 250ml Cream

  • Salt and Pepper to Taste

  • 1.5 cups or 115g Sharp Cheddar Cheese (1 cup or 75g for the sauce and 1/2 cup or 40g to top the Scalloped Potatoes)

  • 4 cups or roughly 6 Russet Potatoes (cut 1/4 inch thick or 6mm)

  • 1 cup or 140g of Ham (chopped)

  • Dash of Cayenne Pepper

Preparation

1.To make the cheese sauce: Add the butter to a sauce pan over medium to high heat.  Once melted add the onions cook until tender and add the thyme and heat for 30 seconds.  Add your flour, stir, and cook for 2 minutes over medium heat.   Pour in the milk and cream, mix. Add salt and pepper and bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook until thick.  Turn off the heat and add 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese and mix it into the sauce.


2.Cut the potatoes 1/4 inch or 6mm thick. Soak them for 5 minutes and then dry them with a towel.


3. To a buttered 8x8 baking dish add a layer of potatoes, a layer of cheese sauce and spread it over the top of the potatoes. Sprinkle on 1/2 the ham.  Then add another layer of potatoes.  Spoon on another layer of cheese sauce and spread it on the top then add ham.  Make one more set of layers of the potatoes, cheese, and ham.  Add some cayenne pepper and 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.


4.pre heat the oven at 350ËšF or 176ËšC bake for 5o minutes or until golden brown.
