This Chipped Beef Gravy, or SOS Gravy, is a depression era classic. If you make it, you will not only save a few dollars, you will also be delighted at how scrumptious it really is. Give this low-cost comfort food a shot and let me know what you think.
Ingredients
4 tbsp or 45g Unsalted Butter
2.25oz or 64g Dried Beef
4 tbsp or 45g Flour
2 cups or 500ml Milk
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
Dash of Cayenne Pepper
Dash of Salt
Preparation
1.Cut the dried beef into small strips or chips.
2.Add butter to a skillet over medium to high heat and melt it down. Then drop in the dried beef and sauté for about 30 seconds. Sprinkle the flour onto the beef, stir, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
3.Pour in the milk, stir, and cook over medium to high heat. Once the sauce starts to simmer, turn the heat to low and add the black pepper and cayenne pepper. Cook until the gravy is as thick as desired.
